10 Beach Idioms Inspired by the Sea
Hey everyone, I have been at the beach this weekend and it inspired me to share these fun beach idioms with you.
10 Beach Idioms:
- Catch some rays: This means to spend time in the sun.
- Like a fish out of water: To feel uncomfortable in a situation.
- Plenty more/of fish in the sea: Used to comfort someone by reminding them that there are many other people in the world that they can have relationships with.
- The world is your oyster: This is a way to tell someone that they have infinite choices in life and can do anything they want to do.
- Something’s fishy: This slang expression is used to say that something seems strange or suspicious; not everything is as it seems.
- Clam up: To clam up means to become quiet suddenly due to embarrassment or nervousness.
- Happy as a clam: Another fun clam idiom. Happy as a clam means to be very happy.
- Smooth Sailing: This refers to something easy, usually after overcoming a bit of issues with the activity you are talking about.
- (Pool/card/loan, etc.) Shark: You can use this idiom when talking about a person who tricks or exploits others. If it’s a pool shark, it’s someone who tricks people out of money with pool or billiards. A loan shark tricks people into high interest rate loans and a card shark tricks people into thinking they aren’t as good at cards as other people at the table.
-
A ray of sunshine: Not to trick you, but this idiom can be used in two ways depending on how the person says it.
Positively, we could say,“Wow, you are just a ray of sunshine! You make everyone around here smile!” You could also use this sarcastically to mean the opposite by saying, “Wow, you are a real ray of sunshine, huh?” Said this tone in this way, it is a snarky way to say that you think the person you are talking to is a jerk.
